BBDYI has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to introduce safeguards that protect women in politics from digital threats and to ensure transparency in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) during elections.

The group’s statement comes as Nigeria prepares for its 2027 general elections, a period when the role of AI in campaign strategy, voter outreach and election monitoring is expected to expand.

BBDYI warned that the growing use of AI could facilitate targeted misinformation and manipulation of voter perception, especially if the technology is deployed without clear regulatory oversight.

In addition to calling for regulatory guidelines, the group emphasised the need for robust digital security measures to shield female politicians from online harassment and cyberattacks that could undermine their political participation.

INEC has not yet issued a response to the call, but the appeal highlights increasing scrutiny of technology’s influence on Nigeria’s democratic processes and the importance of protecting vulnerable groups in the political arena.
