The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) has publicly opposed the Federal Government’s proposal to use Medipool as a drug supply partner, warning that the move could weaken regulatory oversight and threaten national security.

In a statement released to the press, PSN said that outsourcing drug procurement to Medipool may create gaps in the quality control and monitoring processes that are essential to ensuring safe and effective medicines reach patients across the country.

The government has been looking for ways to address persistent drug shortages and improve supply chain efficiency. However, PSN cautions that any partnership with a private supplier must be accompanied by robust oversight mechanisms and clear accountability frameworks.

PSN urged the authorities to involve professional bodies and regulatory agencies in the decision‑making process and to maintain stringent standards for drug quality, safety and distribution.

The debate comes amid growing concerns about counterfeit and substandard medicines in Nigeria, a country that faces significant challenges in ensuring a reliable pharmaceutical supply chain.

As of now, the Federal Government has not issued a formal response to PSN’s objections.
