Police in Cross River State are searching for a male hotel guest who vanished after checking into a Calabar South hotel with a woman who was later found dead, authorities said on Wednesday.
The deceased, whose identity has not yet been established, was discovered at a hotel on Clifford Lane in Calabar South. Police are treating the case as a suspected homicide.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the woman had lodged at the hotel together with an unidentified man. His current whereabouts remain unknown, and investigators are working to locate him and determine the events that led to the discovery of the body.
A photograph of the deceased has been released by the Cross River State Police Command in an effort to identify her and trace her family and associates. The command has appealed to anyone who recognises the woman or has information about her identity or the missing male guest to come forward.
The hotel receptionist who was on duty when the two guests were admitted is now in police custody and is assisting investigators. Police say he is being questioned about the admission of the guests and the events leading up to the discovery of the body, but the command clarified that his detention does not imply guilt and that any further action will depend on evidence and the law.
Commissioner of Police in Cross River State, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, directed that the investigation be handled professionally and objectively, stressing the importance of a thorough inquiry into the case.
