On Saturday, Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris issued a statement mourning the deaths of two prominent traditional leaders in the Gwandu Emirate.
Alhaji Muhammad Zayyanu Haruna Rasheed, better known as Sarkin Gabas and the District Head of Gwandu, died on Wednesday, 23 September 2026 after a prolonged illness.
Shortly thereafter, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku Mohammed, the District Head of Diggi and Dangaladiman Diggi, also passed away, leaving the emirate bereft of two key figures.
In his message, Governor Idris described the losses as painful to the communities and the Gwandu Emirate, noting that both leaders had contributed to peace, unity and development through their traditional roles. He said the deaths had created a vacuum within the emirate.
The governor extended his condolences to Emir of Gwandu Alhaji Muhammad Iliyasu Bashar, to the families of the deceased, to the people of Gwandu and Diggi, and to the wider emirate.
