The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has publicly endorsed the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) recent decision to cut its benchmark interest rate, noting that the move reflects progress in curbing the country’s inflation.

In its statement, the IMF highlighted that the reduction in the policy rate comes as inflationary pressures in Nigeria show signs of easing, allowing the central bank to adjust monetary conditions without jeopardising price stability.

At the same time, the IMF cautioned the CBN against “premature easing,” warning that further rate cuts could be risky if inflation does not continue to decline at a sustainable pace.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, has grappled with double‑digit inflation in recent years, prompting the CBN to implement a series of rate hikes before this recent cut. The IMF’s endorsement underscores the importance of a data‑driven approach to monetary policy.

While the IMF’s support signals confidence in the CBN’s current stance, the fund’s warning suggests that future adjustments will depend closely on inflation trends and broader economic conditions.
