Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has secured a fifth term in the United States House of Representatives, retaining her seat for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District in Tuesday’s midterm elections. According to projections by CBS News, Omar defeated Republican candidate John Nagel, a victory that stands out given the intense scrutiny she has faced from the White House.
The Somali-born lawmaker has been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly targeted her over her background and political views. Trump recently called on Omar to resign, renewing allegations of identity fraud after a court filing identified her by an additional name. Former US President Barack Obama has accused Trump of targeting the Minnesota lawmaker specifically because of her political stance.
Omar’s re-election comes amid an ongoing federal investigation involving allegations concerning her immigration and naturalisation records. On October 12, federal agents searched Omar’s Washington, DC, residence as part of this probe. Reports indicate that her phone and passport were seized during the search, while subpoenas were issued to some of her relatives.
Despite the legal proceedings, Omar has consistently denied any wrongdoing and has not been charged with a crime. She has represented Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District since winning the 2018 midterm elections, a role in which she became one of the first two Muslim women elected to the US House of Representatives.
In her victory speech, Omar stated that her re-election demonstrated that voters would support candidates who prioritised compassion and empathy in their leadership. The result underscores her continued political resilience in the face of sustained presidential attacks and federal legal challenges.
