Abuja – The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) said its gas transportation network remains fully operational and is not responsible for the recent decline in electricity generation, a statement released on Friday by Chief Corporate Communications Officer Andy Odeh.

According to NNPC, operational records from its subsidiary, NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC), show no transportation‑related constraints within the network that could explain the shortfall in power output.

The clarification comes after the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) issued a statement on 5 November attributing the drop in generation partly to limited gas availability and reduced water inflows at hydroelectric stations.

While NISO highlighted gas supply as a factor, NNPC stressed that the status of its transport infrastructure is separate from issues such as gas production, commercial supply arrangements and actual deliveries to individual power plants. The company noted that gas production has risen by about 10 percent year‑to‑date in 2026, a gain it linked to the Federal Government’s gas development and monetisation agenda.

“Gas supply availability is therefore not a challenge as NNPC remains committed to supporting efforts to improve electricity generation through safe, reliable and efficient gas supply and transportation,” the statement said.

NNPC added that pinpointing the causes of the generation shortfall requires a broader assessment of the gas‑to‑power value chain, including the operational readiness of generating units, plant maintenance schedules and the actual gas offtake by power stations. It called for a coordinated review of operational data by gas suppliers, transporters, power generators and NISO to identify any constraints and guide appropriate interventions.

The oil company reaffirmed its commitment to developing dependable energy infrastructure and working with stakeholders to translate Nigeria’s gas resources into a more reliable electricity supply for the nation’s consumers.
