The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has rejected claims that bottlenecks in its gas transportation network are behind the recent drop in electricity generation across the country, stating that gas supply is not the cause of the low power output.

In a statement released to the press, NNPC officials emphasized that the company’s gas delivery to power plants remains uninterrupted and that any shortfall in electricity generation must be linked to other factors within the power sector.

Nigeria’s electricity system is heavily dependent on natural gas, which fuels the majority of its thermal power stations. Over the past months, the nation has experienced a noticeable decline in generated megawatts, prompting scrutiny of the gas supply chain among other components of the energy infrastructure.

NNPC affirmed its commitment to maintaining a reliable gas supply for power generation and urged stakeholders to address the broader challenges affecting the grid, including transmission constraints and plant maintenance, to restore stable electricity output.
