Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare Iziaq Salako announced on Monday in Lagos that the Federal Government of Nigeria aims to produce 70 % of essential medicines locally by 2030.
Salako made the statement while opening the 8th Nigeria Pharma Manufacturers Expo, an event organised by the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Group of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (PMG‑MAN).
The target is part of a broader government effort to expand domestic manufacturing capacity, reduce dependence on imported drugs and strengthen the country’s health‑security framework.
Achieving the 70 % goal will require scaling up local production capabilities, encouraging investment in pharmaceutical infrastructure and fostering partnerships across the supply chain.
Officials said the initiative is intended to improve the availability and affordability of medicines for Nigeria’s population, which is the largest in Africa.
