The Delta State Government has approved a N4 billion fund to empower 15,000 indigent residents, providing financial support for small businesses and entrepreneurship.

The initiative, announced by State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information Mr Charles Aniagwu, is part of a broader effort to ease economic hardship across the state.

Mr Aniagwu made the disclosure after the State Executive Council meeting, presided over by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, at Government House in Asaba. He was accompanied by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon.

Beneficiaries will be selected from the 25 local government areas under the Delta State Social Investment Programme, with the governor directing that the selection process follow clear eligibility criteria.

Priority will be given to indigent persons who already run small businesses, those looking to establish micro‑enterprises and vulnerable residents who need financial support to improve their circumstances. The grant is intended to help existing businesses overcome economic challenges, provide start‑up capital for aspiring entrepreneurs and enable beneficiaries to meet pressing needs.

The commissioner said the programme would be rolled out in the coming weeks, as part of the government’s effort to translate ongoing economic reforms into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary Deltans.
