UN officials have confirmed that 109 people, including children, died when a boat carrying 350 passengers capsized off Djibouti’s coast on Thursday night.
The vessel was travelling from Djibouti to Yemen when it overturned near the port town of Obock, according to the UN statement.
While the UN has not released a full casualty list, it noted that a significant number of the victims were children.
Rescue operations were carried out by local authorities and maritime agencies, but the exact number of survivors remains unclear.
The incident underscores the perilous journeys that migrants undertake across the Red Sea, though no additional details were provided by the UN.
