The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has issued a warning that its name must not be used to endorse political candidates or mobilise support for parties ahead of the 2027 general elections. The statement, released by CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh, came after reports of a church‑based mobilisation allegedly led by Archbishop Chivir Chianson.

In the statement, Okoh clarified that Chianson and the organisation he represents have no authority to speak or act on behalf of CAN. He said the Association had become aware of attempts to create the impression that it was involved in political mobilisation and described such representations as misleading and unauthorised.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Archbishop Chivir Chianson is not the General Secretary of CAN and has no authority or mandate to speak or act on its behalf,” the statement read.

CAN, which represents Christians across Nigeria, reiterated its commitment to remain politically neutral. The president said the Association would continue to engage with government and other stakeholders on national issues, but that such engagement would not amount to support for any particular party, candidate or electoral ambition.

Okoh urged Christians, members of the public and media outlets to disregard any claims that Chianson or his group had been authorised to represent CAN. He called on TVC News and other media organisations to verify the credentials of individuals presented as CAN representatives and warned that the Association would take steps to protect its name, credibility and institutional integrity against unauthorised representation.
