AI Should Complement, Not Replace Judicial Officers: A'Ibom CJ
The Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Ekaete Fabian-Obot, has called for the systematic application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Nigeria's justice sector, emphasizing its role as a tool to assist judicial officers rather than replace them.
In an exclusive interview with PunchNG, Justice Fabian-Obot stated, "We must ensure that AI is used to support and enhance the work of judicial officers, rather than replace them. By doing so, we can harness the potential of technology to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the justice system."
The Chief Judge emphasized the importance of AI in areas such as case management, document analysis, and data analysis, which could help reduce the workload on judicial officers and improve decision-making.
Justice Fabian-Obot also acknowledged the potential risks and concerns associated with AI implementation, including the possibility of biases and errors in AI algorithms. He assured that proper regulations and guidelines are necessary to ensure these risks are minimized.
"We must ensure that AI systems are transparent, accountable, and subject to human oversight to prevent the introduction of unintended biases or errors," he said.
The Chief Judge further stressed the need for collaboration between the judiciary, AI developers, and other stakeholders to ensure the integration of AI into the justice system is done in a responsible and effective manner.
"It is crucial that we involve all relevant parties in the development, deployment, and monitoring of AI systems within the justice sector," he concluded.
