ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar publicly mocked All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign director‑general Abdulaziz Yari after Yari described Nigerians as “lazy” and suggested that “hungry Nigerians are just lazy.” In a statement released by the ADC’s Presidential Campaign Council, Atiku said Yari’s grammatical blunder was so egregious it could “wake the dead.”
Yari’s comment, which was delivered in a poorly constructed sentence, linked poverty to laziness, implying that those who are hungry are simply not working hard enough. The remark was part of criticism aimed at the APC’s “Affordable Life” campaign.
Speaking through the ADC’s Director of Strategic Communications, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku asserted that President Bola Tinubu’s administration “does not believe Nigerians are hungry.” He added that his own government would “carefully invest in social welfare and stop the unfair system your government uses to take money away from people who are struggling financially in Nigeria.”
Atiku further challenged Yari’s stance, asking, “How can you fix an issue you won’t even admit exists? You made poverty, then mock the people who are going through it.” He accused the APC of “poor leadership” that harms “the millions of Nigerians who are struggling and need help.”
The exchange comes as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 presidential election, with the ADC and APC positioned as major contenders. Poverty and social welfare remain central issues in the campaign discourse, underscoring the political rivalry between Atiku’s ADC platform and the ruling APC’s policies.
