Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged the international community to back a new package of U.S. sanctions against Russia that President Donald Trump has put on hold, describing the decision as “unfortunate.”
In his remarks, Zelenskyy stressed that the sanctions are intended to increase pressure on Moscow and to support Ukraine’s ongoing defence against the Russian invasion that began in February 2022.
While condemning the postponement, the Ukrainian leader stopped short of directly attacking Trump, opting instead for measured language that highlighted the negative impact of the delay on Kyiv’s diplomatic efforts.
The comments come amid a wave of growing tension between Kyiv and Washington, with recent days seeing a sharp rise in public disagreements over policy and aid.
U.S. sanctions have been a cornerstone of Western strategy to weaken Russia’s war machine, and Kyiv continues to call on allies to maintain a united front despite the current pause in implementation.
