Women in Politics: Nigeria’s political structure not built for women —  Adeola Azeez

Adeola Azeez, a former corporate executive and prominent advocate for women in leadership, has stated that Nigeria’s political structure is not designed to accommodate women adequately. Speaking ahead of the 2027 general elections, Azeez, who recently won the Ijebu Central Federal Consistency primary election for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ogun State, highlighted the systemic barriers that continue to hinder female participation in elective offices.

Azeez, a daughter of the late Afenifere leader Pa Ayo Adebanjo and a founding member of the Women in Politics (WIMPol) group, transitioned from the corporate sector to politics following her retirement in 2020. She first contested for the House of Representatives in 2023 to represent the Ogbomoso Central Federal Constituency. Although she did not secure her party’s ticket that year, she attributes the outcome to the rigid nature of party structures rather than a lack of resources or preparation.

“Nigeria’s political system is not structured to accommodate women adequately... Women must navigate party structures and the interests of those who control them. This is one of the reasons we must continue to examine the barriers preventing women from participating fully in politics,” Azeez said.

Despite facing common challenges such as political violence and limited access to funding, Azeez noted that her corporate background and established network of sponsors mitigated financial hurdles. She emphasized her refusal to engage in "money politics" or compromise her values to gain acceptance within the party hierarchy. Instead, she sought to run a campaign based on her professional record, ideas, and direct engagement with constituents, aiming to serve as a symbol of a new chapter for women in Nigerian politics.

Reflecting on her 2023 experience, Azeez stated that while the loss of the ticket was a setback, it provided her with significant visibility and allowed her to build a stronger relationship with the people of her constituency. She maintained that political participation extends beyond winning an election, noting that there is a continuous responsibility to contribute to community development regardless of one’s official status. During this period, she facilitated the establishment of a technology hub and supported a back-to-school initiative in her area.

Looking ahead, Azeez has confirmed her intention to contest again in the 2027 general election, this time on a different party platform. She believes her previous campaign strengthened her resolve and established a credible foundation for future political engagement. Her stance underscores a broader call for a political system that recognizes competence and allows women to compete meaningfully for elective positions without being forced to compromise their principles.
