Political analyst Ilyasu Gadu warned that the growing friction between Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and the governors of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) could trigger a serious rupture within the party as Nigeria looks toward the 2027 elections.
Gadu said APC governors have never been “accommodating” to Wike, fearing that the former Rivers State governor could repeat the strategy he used to weaken and fragment the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by doing the same to the APC.
According to the analyst, the governors now believe they can hold the party together and win the 2027 polls without Wike’s assistance, viewing his role in President Bola Tinubu’s 2023 victory as a “happenstance” rather than a lasting partnership.
The tension has surfaced in a dispute between Wike and the Progressive Governors Forum, led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, over the Rainbow Coalition. The coalition, which now fields senatorial and other candidates across several states, is seen as a challenge to the unity of the APC governors.
“From all indications, it will lead to some serious rupture in the party, that’s the APC, the ruling party, and even with the relationship between the APC and Wike… they have told him they don’t want him in this party,” Gadu said.
Gadu concluded that the blurred lines and lack of accommodation are likely to create internal problems for the APC as it prepares for the 2027 elections, with governors seeking to maintain control without Wike’s influence.
