Magdalena Cornford, a Polish‑born teacher who first arrived in Nigeria over a decade ago, has turned her expatriate life into a mission of education and advocacy for people with special needs. The former “party girl” on Instagram now spends her days in classrooms and art studios, teaching children and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities at a school run by the Daughters of Charity.

“I imagined staying for a year or two before moving back to Germany,” Cornford told the Sunday Sun. “Little did I know that this country would become such an important part of my story.” Her work at large international schools has been complemented by volunteer lessons in painting, tie‑dying and crafts, where she says art becomes a language that lets students express themselves beyond words.

Since November 2016, she has said, the volunteer role has grown into a “deeply meaningful commitment.” “Education is not simply about academic achievement,” she explains. “It is about seeing the person behind the disability and recognising abilities where others may see limitations.” In her view, every student deserves to feel capable, appreciated and loved.

“Having special needs does not mean that a person should be denied opportunities to learn, develop or achieve something meaningful,” Cornford said. “Even the smallest steps forward can represent enormous achievements.”

Her approach blends patience, empathy and high expectations. “Sometimes a lesson requires structure and clear expectations; at other times it requires flexibility, reassurance, a little humour or simply the willingness to pause and approach a situation differently,” she added. The relationships she has built with her students, she notes, have taught her that connection does not always depend on language and that happiness can be found in the simplest moments.
