Dele Momodu, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has explained the rationale behind the party’s decision to appoint detained former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai as deputy chairman of its presidential campaign council. Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s "The Morning Brief" on Friday, Momodu stated that the appointment was intended to honour El-Rufai’s personal sacrifices.
The appointment was made following the unveiling of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council on Thursday, a move aimed at preparing for the 2027 general elections. Kashim Ibrahim-Imam was named chairman of the council, while El-Rufai was selected to serve in the deputy role despite his current detention.
Momodu characterized El-Rufai’s legal situation as inherently political, asserting that the former governor is being held without having committed a crime. He noted that El-Rufai had the option to remain outside the country but chose to return, fully aware that he would face arrest.
“The bail conditions given to him are so horrendous that even his enemies would wonder why he has to go through such painful experience in the hands of a government that he helped to midwife,” Momodu said.
The ADC chieftain further argued that El-Rufai played a pivotal role in the current administration’s rise to power. He claimed that without El-Rufai’s contributions, President Bola Tinubu would not be in office today, emphasizing the political nature of the challenges El-Rufai currently faces.
