The Zamfara State Ministry of Health, in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), held a sensitisation and training session for health workers on cholera, diphtheria, acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) and other vaccine‑preventable diseases (VPDs) at the Darma Hotel in Gusau.
The programme was designed to strengthen clinicians’ knowledge, skills and capacity to detect, assess, report, manage and respond to cases of the highlighted diseases across the state.
According to a press statement from the Ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Sulaiman Isah, the training covered an overview of the epidemiology of cholera, diphtheria, AFP and other VPDs in Zamfara, as well as the standard case definitions for cholera and diphtheria. Participants were also instructed on appropriate case assessment, classification, treatment protocols, referral pathways and triage procedures.
In addition, the session emphasized the roles and responsibilities of clinicians during outbreak response, focusing on early detection, timely notification and reporting, proper case management, infection prevention and control (IPC), and coordination with surveillance and response teams.
A key component of the workshop was IPC in health facilities. Health workers were sensitised to practical measures aimed at preventing and controlling the transmission of infectious diseases among patients, health‑care staff and the wider community.
