Variety’s long‑running “10 Comics to Watch” list has become a barometer for the next wave of stand‑up talent. The magazine first launched the series in 2000, and the inaugural edition featured comedians who would later become household names, including Zach Galifianakis, Maria Bamford, Patton Oswalt and Louis C.K.
Over the years the franchise has continued to spotlight performers on the cusp of wider recognition. Fifteen years after the original lineup, Variety highlighted Nate Bargatze and Nikki Glaser as rising stars, underscoring the publication’s knack for spotting future industry favorites.
Each year the list is compiled by Variety’s comedy editors, who sift through festival rosters, touring circuits and online buzz to identify the ten comedians most likely to shape the comedy landscape in the coming months.
While the 2026 edition has not yet revealed its full roster, industry insiders expect the list to feature a mix of seasoned performers and fresh faces, continuing the tradition of spotlighting talent that is poised for breakthrough.
Variety’s “10 Comics to Watch” remains a respected guide for fans and professionals alike, offering a snapshot of the comedy scene’s evolving talent pool and often serving as a springboard for the next generation of stars.
