Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, called on President Bola Tinubu to adopt his proposal to crash petrol prices in Nigeria during a press conference held on Friday at his residence in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Speaking to a worldwide media audience, the former vice‑president reiterated his demand that Tinubu reverse the fuel subsidy regime, arguing that doing so would alleviate the suffering of Nigeria’s poor masses.
Atiku emphasized that Tinubu has roughly eight months left in his term and urged the president to act now, saying the remaining period of the administration should be used to ease the burden on households, workers and businesses.
“Tinubu should not be ashamed to do what is necessary to lower the price of petrol simply because Atiku Abubakar proposed a government intervention,” he said, adding that the president could “take the idea, rename it if he wishes, and even take the credit. What matters to me is that Nigerians pay less.”
He continued, “A sensible idea does not become a bad idea because it came from your opponent. If responsible intervention can lower prices, intervene. If changing course can help Nigerians’ families, change course for God’s sake.”
Atiku warned that Nigerians do not need “another elaborate palliative economy” and urged the government not to make life unbearable for the population.
Fuel subsidies have long been a contentious issue in Nigeria, with periodic adjustments affecting both the national budget and the cost of living for ordinary citizens.
