Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Bola Tinubu, Temitope Ajayi, slammed former Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi on Thursday, calling his claim that he won the 2023 election an “unfathomable delusion.” Ajayi said the accusation was “unfathomable” because Obi, who finished third in the vote, had repeatedly insisted he was the victor.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Obi was the third‑place candidate in the 2023 presidential election. Despite the official results, Obi has maintained that he won the poll, a stance he has retracted only to reassert almost four years later.

In a recent interview with BBC Africa, Obi reiterated his belief that the election was rigged and that he had actually won. He also said that there is no evidence to support his claim, a paradox that Ajayi highlighted in his criticism.

“The unfathomable delusion that makes a man who came 3rd in an election to keep insisting he won almost 4 years after certainly can’t be explained. The same man has now turned around to say he has no evidence to prove his claim, yet he still maintained his position that he won,” Ajayi wrote on X.

The President’s office’s remarks underscore the continuing controversy over the 2023 election results, with no new evidence or official reversal of the INEC findings announced at this time.
