Professor Peter Olapegba has taken up the role of the 14th Vice‑Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria’s oldest and most prestigious university, pledging to provide “purposeful leadership” and to drive a “transformative agenda.”

The University of Ibadan, founded in 1948 as a college of the University of London, has long been a centre of higher learning in West Africa. Its new chief executive inherits a campus of over 40,000 students and a staff body that has recently called for renewed academic standards and research excellence.

In his inaugural address, Prof Olapegba emphasized the need for strategic planning, stronger governance and enhanced stakeholder engagement to reposition the university on both national and global stages. He described his leadership approach as “purposeful,” signalling a focus on measurable outcomes and accountability.

The appointment has been welcomed by faculty unions and student representatives, who expressed optimism that the promised “transformative agenda” will address long‑standing challenges such as funding constraints, infrastructural decay and the need for curriculum modernization.

As the university embarks on this new chapter, observers will watch how Prof Olapegba translates his vision into concrete policies, with the expectation that his tenure will shape the institution’s trajectory for years to come.
