Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has lauded President Bola Tinubu for approving lifetime pension payments for retired Comptroller-Generals and Deputy Comptroller-Generals of Immigration. The minister described the president as a visionary leader whose policies are designed to yield long-term, lasting positive impacts on the nation.
Tunji-Ojo made these remarks on Friday in Abuja during the closing ceremony of the Specialised Border Control and Immigration Management System (BCIMS) Training at the Immigration Headquarters. He emphasized that under the administration’s "renewed hope agenda," the government is building institutional systems intended to remain effective and robust even after the current leadership steps down.
“President Bola Tinubu has never been about the immediate, but the future. He understands that the most prosperous nations do not boil, cook, and eat their seeds, they plant them. What this president is doing is planting the seed so that there will be abundance for the future,” Tunji-Ojo stated.
The minister highlighted several administrative achievements under the current administration, noting that the president has resolved long-standing backlogs in personnel promotions. According to Tunji-Ojo, no fewer than 50,000 personnel have been granted new ranks and offices within the last three years, a milestone he described as unprecedented in the country’s history.
In addition to promotions, the Minister of Interior pointed to significant increases in recruitment, stating that the government has onboarded at least 40,000 new recruits simultaneously. He further noted that the administration has implemented salary increments and introduced hazard and peculiar allowances for service members.
Specifically addressing the welfare of retired officials, Tunji-Ojo noted that the previous pension for Comptroller-Generals was approximately N130,000, a figure he described as discouraging. He stated that President Tinubu subsequently signed off on lifetime salary provisions for both Comptroller-Generals and Deputy Comptroller-Generals. The minister concluded by asserting that the president has prioritized the welfare of the services more than any previous administration and expects personnel to reciprocate by performing their duties effectively to satisfy the Nigerian public.
