US President Donald Trump called Brazil’s recent presidential election a “disgrace” on Thursday, refusing to confirm whether he recognises left‑wing candidate Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as the new president.
When reporters asked if he accepted Lula’s victory, Trump said, “I think the election was a disgrace in Brazil. I don’t want to comment on it right now, but I thought it was a very great embarrassment to the people of Brazil… I thought it was a very disgraceful situation for Brazil.”
The comments came after right‑wing rival Flavio Bolsonaro claimed victory and fled to the United States, declaring himself the rightful leader of Brazil.
Lula, a former president, won the election against Bolsonaro, who has been a prominent figure in Brazil’s conservative movement.
Trump’s remarks were made as part of a broader criticism of the electoral process, but he stopped short of formally acknowledging the outcome.
