President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he had rejected an Iranian proposal to open the Strait of Hormuz within seven days, telling reporters outside the White House that the plan was unacceptable.
The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman, is a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, carrying a significant proportion of the world’s petroleum exports.
“I reject their proposal,” Trump said.
“They want to make a deal where they open the Strait immediately because they’re losing so badly. They want to make a deal and I think that’s fine. I like making a deal too.”
Iran had suggested that it would open the waterway within a week, a move that the United States has declined to accept. The statement comes amid ongoing tensions over the region’s strategic maritime routes.
