The Nigerian army has launched a manhunt for gunmen who attacked a military checkpoint in Plateau State on Saturday night, killing a soldier and stealing weapons.

The assault took place at about 8 p.m. on Saturday at the Sopp checkpoint in Ungwan Boka, located in the Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State. Troops of the army’s Operation Enduring Peace were stationed at the checkpoint when the gunmen opened fire.

According to military officials, the attackers fled the scene after the shooting, taking the weapons they had seized. The army confirmed the death of one soldier during the incident.

Plateau State, in Nigeria’s central region, has been a hotspot for armed attacks and communal violence in recent years, prompting the deployment of specialized operations such as Enduring Peace to bolster security.

Security forces have intensified patrols and are conducting searches across the area in an effort to locate the gunmen and recover the stolen arms, officials said.
