Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), former Vice‑President Atiku Abubakar, alleged on Friday that President Bola Tinubu intends to reinstate Nigeria’s fuel subsidy as a political ploy ahead of the upcoming election. Atiku made the claim during a world press conference held at his residence in Abuja.
He warned Nigerians not to be misled, saying Tinubu will temporarily bring back the subsidy to placate public anger and then, after securing re‑election, revert to the policy of removing it altogether.
President Tinubu announced the removal of the fuel subsidy in his inaugural speech on 29 May 2023. At that time, petrol sold for less than N200 per litre; following the subsidy cut, the price has risen to about N1,430 per litre.
“I’m aware that Lagos transporters are planning a protest. That protest will provide Bola Tinubu the excuse to temporarily bring back fuel subsidy and, after being re‑elected, go back to remove it,” Atiku said.
Atiku’s remarks come as Lagos transport unions are reportedly preparing demonstrations over the high fuel cost. No comment from the Tinubu administration has been reported, and the allegation adds to the political tension as the election draws near.
