Works Minister David Umahi has denied that President Bola Tinubu directed him to award the Lagos‑Calabar highway contract to Hitech, saying he took full responsibility for the decision.

The Lagos‑Calabar highway is a key infrastructure project linking Nigeria’s commercial capital of Lagos with the southeastern city of Calabar. The contract was awarded to the construction firm Hitech.

In a statement to the Punch, Umahi said the award was his own decision and that he accepted full responsibility for it, rejecting claims that the president had intervened.

His comments come amid ongoing scrutiny of procurement processes for large Nigerian infrastructure projects, as the government seeks to promote transparency and accountability in public spending.
