Minister of Works Dave Umahi told Channels Television’s “Sunday Politics” that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is poised to win a significantly larger share of votes in Nigeria’s South‑East in the 2027 presidential election, and that President Bola Tinubu is expected to “harvest a lot of votes” in the region.
Umahi said the APC’s performance in the South‑East could improve markedly on its 2023 showing, adding that while he would not predict the exact number of votes, he believes the party could secure all five South‑East states.
“My faith is telling me we’ll win the five states,” Umahi said when asked how many of the five states the APC might capture.
The minister also dismissed the notion that Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, poses a serious threat to Tinubu or the APC. He noted that Obi is not the only South‑East contender, mentioning “three or four other presidential candidates,” including the Labour Party and “even a woman,” and concluded that Obi “is not a threat as far as I am concerned.”
Umahi’s comments come as political parties and presidential hopefuls intensify preparations for the 2027 general election, with the South‑East expected to remain a pivotal battleground for votes.
