Despite a national push toward digitalisation that began four years ago, cash continues to dominate fare collections, underscoring the challenges of expanding electronic payment infrastructure in Tanzania.

The low share of electronic transactions suggests that many passengers still rely on cash for their daily commutes, a trend that authorities say will need to be addressed if the digital transformation agenda is to gain traction.
