Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez has identified three Nigerian football legends as his primary role models ahead of the Super Eagles' upcoming international fixtures. The 25-year-old cited former national team captains Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha, Joseph Yobo, and William Troost-Ekong as the players who have influenced his career.
Fernandez made the comments in an interview with Football Fans Tribe, speaking in the lead-up to Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The Super Eagles are scheduled to face Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau in the qualifying campaign.
When asked to name his inspirations, the defender listed the trio without hesitation. “Troost-Ekong, Joseph Yobo, and, of course, Jay-Jay Okocha,” Fernandez stated.
Fernandez paid particular tribute to Okocha, highlighting the former winger’s technical ability and flair. “I think the style, elegance, and things that he does with the ball—I think everyone growing up wants to play like that,” he explained.
However, the Rangers defender acknowledged the evolution of the game and the practical challenges of emulating such distinct playing styles. “Obviously, things change, and you end up not playing like that,” he added, noting that while the admiration remains, modern tactical requirements often dictate a different approach on the pitch.
