Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle received a timely boost ahead of his squad announcement for the November international fixtures, as Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez is expected to return to training on Thursday after recovering from an ankle injury.
The 24‑year‑old Nigerian centre‑back suffered the injury during Rangers’ 1‑0 victory over Aberdeen in Saturday’s Premier Sports Cup semi‑final at Hampden Park. Fernandez’s condition initially raised doubts about his availability for the club’s Scottish Premiership match against St Mirren this weekend.
“Fernandez, his ankle was a bit of a mess after the game on Saturday,” said Rangers manager Derek McInnes on Wednesday. “He twisted that but he’s due to train tomorrow and will be fine for the game on Saturday.”
The positive update comes as Chelle prepares to name his squad for Nigeria’s crucial 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Tanzania. The Super Eagles will welcome the visitors to the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on 13 November before travelling to Dar es Salaam for the return leg on 17 November.
