El Dueim, a town in Sudan’s White Nile State, suffered a four‑day power outage that crippled hospital services and disrupted local livelihoods.
The blackout, which began on 1 October 2024 and lasted until 5 October, cut electricity to hospitals, clinics and essential services across the region.
Medical facilities were forced to rely on backup generators, leading to delays in treatment and the postponement of non‑urgent procedures. Patients and staff reported shortages of refrigeration for medicines and challenges in maintaining sterile environments.
Beyond healthcare, the loss of power halted market stalls, closed shops, and stopped public transport, leaving many residents without income and affecting the local economy.
The situation was reported by Sara Taj Elsir for Radio Dabanga. Authorities are investigating the cause of the outage and working to restore power to the affected areas.
