The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government of Nigeria, demanding the completion of unpaid arrears outlined in the 2026 agreement. The union warned that failure to meet this deadline will result in indefinite strike action.

SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim announced the decision during a press briefing in Abuja. The move follows resolutions adopted at the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, which took place over the weekend at the Federal University in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

While acknowledging that the 2026 agreement provided clear modalities for resolving outstanding issues, Ibrahim stated that the implementation of arrears payments has been uneven across various universities. He accused the government of handling the payments in a "haphazard manner" and emphasized that the union would no longer tolerate further delays.

“Agreements and NEC resolutions must translate into concrete action and measurable benefits for our members,” Ibrahim said.

This latest ultimatum follows an earlier warning issued by the union last Thursday regarding delays in executing the 2026 FGN/SSANU Agreement. SSANU previously stressed that it would not accept "unnecessary delays, selective implementation, marginalisation or any attempt to diminish the financial and non-financial provisions of the agreement.” Ibrahim noted that while implementation has commenced in some institutions, it remains incomplete in others due to funding and administrative challenges.

In response to the ongoing situation, the SSANU president has directed branches and zones nationwide to closely monitor the implementation process. Branches are required to maintain accurate membership records, document any cases of non-compliance or victimisation, and submit timely reports to the National Secretariat.
