Sowore Demands Independent Investigation into Attack Incident in Ekiti

Activist and presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has dismissed the recent arrest of 11 suspects linked to an attack on his convoy in Ekiti State, alleging a cover-up by the police.

Speaking to Premium Times, Sowore called for the establishment of an independent team to investigate the incident. He urged the Inspector-General of Police to secure, analyze available CCTV footage, recover stolen devices, and preserve electronic and communication records.

  • Sowore urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the attack, which took place on Sunday, July 18th during his campaign tour in Ekiti State.
  • The activist-turned-politician expressed concerns over the alleged cover-up, stating that the suspects have not been publicly identified or presented to the public.

The AllAfrica Nigeria reports that Sowore's convoy was attacked by unknown gunmen in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, resulting in some of his supporters sustaining injuries.

“I want the police to conduct an independent investigation. The police should not be the ones investigating the matter because they are part of the problem,” Sowore said.

Sowore's call for an independent probe comes amidst growing concerns about the impartiality of the police in handling the case.

The incident has sparked debates on the security situation in the country, with critics questioning the effectiveness of Nigeria's security agencies in protecting high-profile individuals during election campaigns.

Sowore, the founder of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), is a vocal critic of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The presidential candidate has consistently raised concerns over the security situation in Nigeria, particularly in the run-up to the upcoming general elections.

This latest attack adds to the growing list of incidents involving politicians and their supporters during the electoral period, raising questions about the preparedness of security agencies to ensure a safe election process.

The Nigerian police have yet to comment on Sowore's claims and the ongoing investigation into the attack.
