State Governor George Akume, former Minister of Defence T.Y. Danjuma and the Benue State government have jointly pledged to back a ₦5 billion fundraising drive aimed at reviving the dilapidated Government College in Katsina‑Ala.
The secondary school, which has suffered from years of neglect, has been described as “in a state of disrepair” by local officials. The lack of proper facilities has hampered the learning environment for students and staff alike.
Under the proposed plan, the ₦5 billion will be used to overhaul the campus’s infrastructure, upgrade classrooms and laboratories, and provide essential equipment for teachers and pupils.
The pledge follows repeated appeals from community leaders and education advocates who have urged the state to invest in the college’s future. “A revitalised college will benefit the entire community,” said Akume in a statement released to the press.
Benue’s education department will coordinate the fundraising effort, working with private donors, alumni and other stakeholders to secure the necessary funds.
While the exact timeline for the project remains to be confirmed, officials say that the first phase of renovations could begin as early as the next academic year.
