At least seven people were killed and more than 100 injured after two trains collided near the Egyptian city of Giza, officials said.

The crash occurred on a railway line that runs close to Giza, a major urban area on the outskirts of Cairo, when the two trains came into contact with each other. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene shortly after the impact.

Rescue teams worked to extricate passengers from the wreckage and transport the injured to nearby hospitals, where medical staff began treating the victims for a range of injuries.

Egypt’s railway network, one of the oldest in the region, has faced periodic safety concerns, and the government has previously pledged to modernize the system and improve oversight.

Authorities have opened an investigation into the cause of the collision, and officials have urged the public to remain patient as they work to determine the factors that led to the tragedy.
