Croatian political leaders have condemned pro-Nazi chants directed at the visiting team before a UEFA Europa League match in Split. The incident occurred on Thursday when Hajduk Split hosted the Dutch club Ajax, with supporters reportedly chanting slogans associated with the pre-World War II regime.
The controversy erupted prior to the kickoff of the European competition fixture, drawing immediate criticism from Croatian authorities. Leaders in the country slammed the behavior, highlighting the serious nature of the slurs and symbols invoked by the crowd during the pre-match atmosphere.
The remarks targeted the visiting Ajax squad, creating a hostile environment that has since become a focal point for national debate. The use of terminology linked to historical fascist movements in the region has long been a sensitive issue in Croatian society and sports culture.
While the source material does not specify which particular political figures issued the condemnation, the reaction underscores the ongoing efforts by Croatian leadership to distance the nation from its wartime past. The incident adds to a pattern of scrutiny regarding fan behavior in domestic and international football matches.
UEFA has strict regulations prohibiting discriminatory conduct and the display of political, religious, or ideological symbols at football events. Such incidents typically trigger investigations and potential sanctions against the home club if the conduct is verified by match officials.
The match itself proceeded following the pre-game disturbances, but the focus has shifted from the sporting contest to the broader implications of the chants. The episode serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by European football in managing the legacy of historical conflicts within fan bases.
