Senator Sahabi Ya’u Kaura secured a decisive win in the All Progressives Congress (APC) rerun senatorial primary for Zamfara North, receiving 49,176 votes on Monday night in Gusau. The victory puts him in a strong position to obtain the party’s nomination for the 2027 general elections.

Ya’u’s lead was overwhelming, with his nearest rival, Alhaji Tijjani Yahaya, polling 9,628 votes and Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi 2,602 votes. The margin between Ya’u and Yahaya stood at 39,548 votes.

Dr Auwal Abdullahi Aliyu, chairman of the APC Senatorial Primary Election Committee, announced the results and confirmed that Ya’u had met all constitutional requirements and guidelines set by the party for the primary exercise.

The incumbent senator’s emphatic victory has reignited criticism of former Zamfara State Governor Abdulaziz Yari, who some APC supporters say has exacerbated internal divisions and deepened the political crisis within the state party.

Party members have called for a more inclusive leadership structure that prioritises unity, accountability and collective interest rather than personal ambitions. They argue that resolving these divisions is essential for strengthening the APC ahead of the 2027 elections.

Ya’u’s triumph adds a new dimension to the APC’s internal contest, shifting attention to efforts aimed at reconciling aggrieved members and consolidating the party’s position in Zamfara North.
