Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, a decision he made without first speaking to Portugal’s head coach, Jorge Jesus.
The 41‑year‑old forward informed the Portuguese Football Federation president, Pedro Proença, of his choice to quit, but has not communicated with Jesus since September 30, according to the Portuguese outlet A Bola.
Sources say Ronaldo no longer wishes to play under Jesus. He revealed his retirement just before the federation announced the squad for the November international break, a timing that effectively prevented him from being called up.
Jesus had been preparing to invite the Al‑Nassr striker to the upcoming fixtures, but was caught off guard by the announcement.
Ronaldo’s decision comes as he continues to play club football for Al‑Nassr, while the national team moves forward without its long‑time captain.
