Pope Leo, 71, is recovering in Rome’s Gemelli hospital after undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous growth from his lung, the Vatican said.

The operation, carried out at the hospital’s specialist oncology unit, was aimed at excising the tumour and preventing further spread.

Hospital staff reported that the pontiff is in stable condition and receiving ongoing care following the procedure.

A Vatican spokesperson confirmed that Pope Leo is recovering well and is expected to continue his duties as his health improves.

The Gemelli hospital, located in the heart of Rome, is a leading centre for cancer treatment and has treated several high‑profile patients in the past.
