In a recent development, the Lagos State Police Command has arrested a police officer who was filmed making a racist statement that an Igbo man could never become President of Nigeria. The officer, identified as Osumah Frank, was caught on video saying that Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, or any other Igbo person could not hold the nation's highest office.
SP Abimbola Adebisi, the command’s spokesperson, confirmed the arrest and said the officer’s remarks were made in a personal capacity and do not reflect the views of the Lagos State Police Command or the Nigeria Police Force.
The command has begun “appropriate disciplinary action” against Frank in accordance with the established regulations of the Nigeria Police Force. The statement emphasised that the officer’s comments were not official and that the force would not tolerate conduct that could bring it into disrepute.
“Wearing the Police uniform comes with the responsibility to uphold the dignity and integrity of the Force,” the spokesperson added. “The command will not condone any conduct capable of bringing the Force into disrepute or undermining public confidence in the Police.”
Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, reiterated that all personnel are expected to maintain professionalism, civility, discipline and respect for members of the public at all times. The incident has prompted a review of the officer’s conduct and a reminder of the standards expected of law‑enforcement officers in Nigeria.
