The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Northern States and Federal Capital Territory, has issued a stern condemnation of the ongoing killings and destruction of property in Plateau State, urging federal and state authorities to intervene immediately to restore peace. In a statement released on Tuesday, the body expressed "deep sadness and grave concern" over the persistent violence that has resulted in the loss of innocent lives across affected communities.
Rev. Dr. Yakubu Pam, Chairman of Northern CAN, strongly denounced the attacks as "senseless bloodshed and destruction." The association called on President Bola Tinubu and the Plateau State Government to take firm and immediate measures to protect residents and establish lasting security in the region. According to Northern CAN, the repeated nature of these attacks highlights a critical failure in the current security framework.
“The persistent destruction of lives and property points to the urgent need for a comprehensive review and strengthening of the nation's security architecture,” the statement read. The Christian body emphasized that citizens should be able to live, work, worship, and raise their families without the constant fear of community attacks. It further stressed that the safety and protection of citizens must remain central to governance and national attention.
Beyond calling for government action, Northern CAN expressed solidarity with those directly impacted by the crisis. “We extend our heartfelt condolences and solidarity to the families who have lost loved ones and to all those whose homes, livelihoods, and communities have been affected by the violence,” the statement noted. The association reaffirmed its commitment to peace, justice, and reconciliation, urging relevant authorities to act swiftly and decisively to prevent further loss of life.
The statement also included an appeal to the residents of Plateau State to maintain unity during this turbulent period. Northern CAN urged the "good people" of the state to reject any actions capable of escalating tensions and to work collectively toward peace and justice. “We equally call on the good people of Plateau State to remain united, reject actions capable of further escalating tensions, and work together in the pursuit of peace, justice, and the protection of their communities,” Pam said.
