Peruvian authorities have seized more than 3,000 tarantulas at an airport in Lima, uncovering a significant wildlife smuggling operation. The spiders were discovered hidden inside dirty socks packed within three suitcases that were in transit to Germany.

The National Forestry and Wildlife Service (SERFOR) confirmed the seizure to Agence France-Presse on Thursday. The investigation identified three individuals involved in the transport: two German citizens and one Polish citizen, who were carrying the contraband luggage.

According to officials, the destination of the shipment was Germany, where the tarantulas could have been sold for an estimated €1.5 million. The discovery highlights the lucrative black market for exotic wildlife and the lengths smugglers will go to conceal their cargo.

The spiders were concealed in a manner designed to evade detection, tucked inside soiled socks within the suitcases. This method of hiding the animals suggests an attempt to bypass standard security screening procedures at the Lima airport.

While the specific legal consequences for the three individuals were not detailed in the initial report, the seizure represents a major enforcement action by SERFOR. The service continues to monitor international travel routes to prevent the illegal trafficking of protected species.
