Patients at the Federal Neuro‑Psychiatric Hospital, Aro in Abeokuta, Ogun State are experiencing severe hardship as a critical shortage of essential equipment, medicines and staff has crippled the facility, a report by Punch Nigeria says.

The lack of functional medical equipment and a reliable supply of psychiatric drugs has forced clinicians to limit or postpone treatments, leaving many patients without the care they need for conditions ranging from depression to schizophrenia.

Staffing shortfalls compound the problem, with the hospital reportedly operating with far fewer health‑care professionals than required to manage its patient load, increasing the burden on the remaining doctors, nurses and support workers.

Federal Neuro‑Psychiatric Hospital, Aro is one of the few specialised mental‑health institutions in the country, serving a large catch‑area that includes Ogun State and neighboring regions. Its challenges reflect broader systemic issues facing Nigeria’s mental‑health sector, which has historically suffered from limited funding and inadequate resources.

Advocates and health officials have called for urgent government intervention to replenish supplies, repair equipment and recruit additional staff, warning that continued neglect could worsen outcomes for some of the nation’s most vulnerable patients.
