The Ondo State Government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a United States‑based firm to introduce electric buses and accompanying charging stations in Akure, the state’s capital, in an effort to lower transportation costs.

The MoU, announced by state officials, outlines a partnership that will see the procurement of electric buses for public use and the installation of the necessary charging infrastructure throughout the city.

According to the agreement, the electric fleet and charging points are intended to provide a more affordable and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional diesel‑powered transport, which currently dominates the region’s commuter market.

Ondo State, located in southwestern Nigeria, has been exploring sustainable mobility solutions as part of broader efforts to modernise its transport sector and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Akure, as the administrative and commercial hub of the state, is slated to become the first Nigerian city to host a dedicated electric bus network.

The signing of the MoU marks the initial step toward deploying the electric vehicles and charging stations, with implementation plans to be detailed by the state government and its US partner in the coming months.
