Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo hailed the Nigeria U‑17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, after they secured a place in the final of the FIFA U‑17 Women’s World Cup with a 3‑1 victory over Brazil.

In a statement released on Sunday, Okpebholo called the win a “major achievement for Nigerian football” and said it gave Nigerians another reason to celebrate. He praised the players’ determination and collective effort, noting that the triumph was the result of the entire squad and the technical crew.

The governor singled out Queen Joseph and Awawu Bashiru for their key contributions to the victory, while stressing that the success belonged to the whole team.

With Japan awaiting the Flamingos in Saturday’s final, Okpebholo urged the players to approach the match with the same commitment and discipline that had carried them to the decisive stage. He expressed confidence that the side could win the trophy and become Nigeria’s first FIFA U‑17 Women’s World Cup champions.

He also assured the squad of the support of Nigerians, particularly residents of Edo State, and wished the players and coaches success, urging them to seize the opportunity to bring the title home.
