Edmonton Oilers forward Zach Hyman extended an invitation to Hall of Famer Mark Messier to visit the team one day after the former player publicly expressed his dismay at the Oilers’ decision to hire former NHL coach Mike Babcock.
Messier, who has long been a respected voice in the hockey world, described his reaction to the appointment as “horrified.” The comment came amid growing criticism of Babcock’s coaching style and the Oilers’ recent performance under his leadership.
Hyman’s invitation, which was sent to Messier’s Edmonton residence, offers the legend a chance to observe the Oilers’ training sessions and game preparations. The forward said he hoped the visit would demonstrate the team’s “positivity” and resilience under Babcock’s guidance.
“I want to show him how we’re working hard and staying positive,” Hyman told reporters. “It’s a good opportunity for him to see what’s happening on the ice.”
While Messier has not yet confirmed whether he will attend, the gesture underscores a broader effort by the Oilers’ coaching staff to address concerns from the hockey community and to reinforce the team’s commitment to improvement.
Mike Babcock, who previously led the Toronto Maple Leafs to a Stanley Cup in 2012, has faced scrutiny over his coaching methods. The Oilers’ management remains confident in his ability to guide the franchise toward a competitive future.
